Dog Behaviour

good recall for your dog It’s easy to forget dogs have their own minds and things which are important to them. We often expect them to fit in with our home environments no problem. Many owners will seek basic dog training to ensure that their dog is obedient, and knows things like walking to heel, sit, stay and recall.  However dog training only scrapes the surface and is very much looking at things from a human’s perspective, rather than a dog’s.  The really important part of dog ownership is understanding your dog’s psychology and the underlying reasons that cause their behaviour if you want to resolve or prevent dog behaviour problems such as:

  • Food aggression…
  • Fear aggression…
  • Dog on dog aggression…
  • Separation anxiety (destructive chewing, howling or toileting while you are out)
  • Hyperactivity and an inability to settle…
  • Over the top behaviour on the walk (pulling, no recall, over enthusiastic with other dogs)
  • Fear of noises, people, dogs etc…
  • Your own dogs fighting one another…
  • And anything else your dog can think of…!

The simple explanation behind any dog behaviour is that it your dog is not human! No matter how much we want to pin human thoughts and emotions on them, dogs have a much more survival-based understanding of the way the world works, and will seek to ensure that its survival, and your survival are being taken care of.  So if you are experiencing any dog behaviour problems, this means that your dog isn’t clear on what it is meant to be doing, so you need to help him/her to understand their role.
